Types of EuroMillions Scams

EuroMillions scams can turn the popular dream of winning a jackpot into a costly nightmare. Here are some of the most popular methods used by fraudsters.

The first point of contact is generally made using one of the following approaches:

Direct Mail

A letter is sent through the post informing the recipient that they have won a lottery prize and need to register their claim in order for their winnings to be processed.

Telephone

A ‘lottery official’ calls the potential victim to tell them about the ‘good news’ and, during the telephone call, will try to extract a payment and/or bank details under the pretence that a ‘processing fee’ or ‘tax’ needs to be paid.

Some scammers have taken to selling fake lottery tickets over the phone. They will ask for payment upfront, requiring the target to disclose their bank details, but the tickets are never sent as they do not exist.

Mobile

A text message is sent informing the recipient that their mobile number was entered into a raffle or lottery and selected at random as the winner.

El Gordo Navidad

Draw Deadlines

As EuroMillions is a pan-European lottery, the time at which the draw takes place will differ due to the numerous time zones across the continent. Draws are held in Paris at 21:00 (CET), meaning that players in some of the participating countries face an earlier deadline by which to enter.

Here is a list of the different deadlines for buying EuroMillions tickets:

Country Draw Deadline
Ireland, Portugal, UK 19:30 (Tuesday & Friday)
Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland 20:30 (Tuesday & Friday)

Please note, if you are playing through a lottery concierge service the cut off time for entry will usually be a couple of hours before the actual draw deadline.

Figures calculated using results drawn between 27/09/2016 and 10/11/2020.

This column displays the percentage of the prize fund allocated to each prize level. The remaining 10% goes into a separate fund, known as the Booster Fund, which is used to ensure there is always enough for the advertised minimum jackpot of €17 million. EuroMillions occasionally holds special draws or promotions, where the guaranteed minimum jackpot can be increased up to as much as €130 million, using surplus funds from the Booster Fund.

The 50% allocated to the jackpot only applies for the first five draws in a series of rollovers. Once the top prize has rolled over five times in a row, the ‘Match 5 + 2’ allocation is adjusted down to 42% until the jackpot gets won. The remaining 8% goes to the Booster Fund, ensuring that this reserve pot receives 18% of funds from the sixth draw in a rollover series until the jackpot is won.

The lowest and highest prize amounts for each prize tier, other than the jackpot, are in respect of individual winning tickets.
The Match 5 + 2 Lucky Stars prize values represent the total jackpot amounts regardless of how many winning tickets there were.

All prize data included in the table above relates to EuroMillions lottery draw results since 27th September 2016 when the Lucky Star pool increased from 11 numbers to 12. The details provided are for information purposes only and are not indicative of future prize values.

How My Million Works

A My Million code is automatically generated for every line of EuroMillions numbers purchased. There is no extra cost to enter the game.

Shortly after the main EuroMillions draw, one unique My Million code will be selected at random from all of the codes purchased for that particular draw. From time to time, special editions of My Million are held in which multiple prizes of €1 million are given away.

The odds of winning a My Million prize will vary from draw to draw as they are dependent on the number of EuroMillions tickets purchased, rather than correctly matching the numbers drawn in the main EuroMillions game.

Playing EuroMillions Around the World

EuroMillions is a lottery that can be played and enjoyed all around the world. Thanks to lottery concierge services like theLotter and lottery betting sites such as Jackpot.com, players from across the globe can regularly take part in EuroMillions draws.

The two systems of play allow you to win the same EuroMillions prizes, but the way in which they work differ slightly. While a lottery concierge service sees a representative purchase a ticket on your behalf, Lotto betting allows you to place a wager on the outcome of a draw. You will receive exactly the same amount of money as those playing with a physical ticket and the odds of winning remain exactly the same.

Details of how to take part in EuroMillions draws using both methods are listed below:

To play via a lottery concierge service:

  • Register an online account. This process is safe and secure.
  • Select your numbers (five from 1 to 50 and two Lucky Stars from a separate pool of 1 to 12).
  • Confirm your selection and pay for your entry.
  • A lottery representative will purchase a ticket on your behalf and save a copy of your entry in your online account.
  • Once the draw has been made, any winnings will be transferred directly into your online account.

To play via a lottery betting site:

  • Register an online account. This process is safe and secure.
  • Select your numbers (five from 1 to 50 and two Lucky Stars from a separate pool of 1 to 12).
  • Confirm your selection and pay for your entry.
  • You will receive confirmation of your bet via email.
  • Once the draw has been made, you will receive an email detailing any prizes you have won. Any winnings will be transferred to your online account.

Examples of Lottery Scams

As more and more people are becoming wise to lottery scams, fraudsters are getting increasingly creative. Here are just some examples of lottery scams you may receive:

Second Chance Lottery/Raffle

Usually based around a rollover draw, the scammer will claim you have won a prize in a ‘second chance’ EuroMillions draw. EuroMillions does not hold such ‘second chance’ draws. Unclaimed prizes are always either returned to the prize pool to pay winners in future draws or transferred to the good causes supported by the lottery.

Lottery Winner Trusts

Some scammers are using the names of known charitable lottery winners to try and extract personal information from the intended victim by claiming that the legitimate jackpot winner is looking to donate funds to people who are less fortunate or in need.

Anti Terrorism Agency

The victim receives a letter telling them there is a cheque waiting to be sent to them as soon as they pay a fee to an agency that ensures international money transfers over a certain value do not contain funds associated with terrorism.

To see an example of a scam letter received, visit the Example EuroMillions Scam page.

EuroMillions Syndicate Winners

There are several notable EuroMillions syndicate wins throughout the history of the game:

  • A family syndicate from County Dublin claimed the biggest ever lottery prize won in Ireland when they won €175 milion on Tuesday 19th February 2019.
  • On Friday 1st July 2016, a syndicate of Dublin bus drivers won a EuroMillions jackpot worth €23.8 million. Each of the 22 members of the group received just over €1 million and even arrived by bus to pick up their cheques!
  • On Friday 6th November 2009, a syndicate of seven office workers in Merseyside won a whopping £45.5 million when their entry was one of two British tickets that split a jackpot of £91.1 million. Each member received £6.5 million.

  • 50% — на призы победителям всех категорий;
  • 28% — на поддержку благотворительных фондов;
  • 12% — в государственную казну;
  • 5% — комиссионные распространителям билетов;
